Walking in the memory
Centro Escursioni Etnos is in Iglesias,
in south-west Sardinia.
Our city lies between the fertile plain of Cixerri and the wild woods on
the Marganai mountains. It is a city full of historic heritage, known in
the Middle Ages as "Villa di Chiesa", with a relevant importance as the most
outstanding centre of the Iglesiente mining district.
Iglesiente was the most important area in Italy as far as lead, zinc and silver
were concerned. Production dates back to the nuraghic era and has progressively
developed for over 20 centuries, reaching its highest splendour in the
20th c. but gradually losing its importance in the last decades until
its closing down in the recent years.
|

|
The Iglesiente landscape carries the marks of this glorious history and offers
the visitors a wide range of emotions and unforgettable experiences.
Hidden by the green lentiscus and cystus bushes, suddenly the remnants of
mining history appear: machines, buildings, villages once filled with the
sounds of workers, today in the deep silence.
|

|
These villages still witness the saga of mines, so important for
Sardinian people and culture.
In the fascinating world of the mines you will meet the contrast of
uncontaminated landscapes and mining villages, fantastic seashores and old
machinery, between the emerald blue shades of the sea and the bright green of
ancient woods.
